Watercolor Painting created for Duluth Art Institute fundraiser, which was a deck of cards.
The red clover came from Split Rock Lighthouse State Park; the girl picking them was a composite of an old headshot of me, looking down (I had searched high and low for such an image, and it was the best I could come up with), and a neighbor named Elizabeth S. posed for the rest of the kneeling figure, my already having the head drawing ready. (I know, pretty weird...)
The bumble bee is from our own garden.
The sort-of interesting story behind the playing card is this: each artist was to be mailed a playing card at random, for them to design for the deck. I had stood there, upon receipt of the initial instructions, and said out loud that I'd probably get something impossible like the "seven of clubs" -- wishing, of course, for something more inspiring, like the Queen or the King. Sure enough, when the envelope came, I had drawn the "seven of clubs" -- somebody up there has a wacky sense of humor.
So what to do, what to do... I was at Split Rock Park one summer day and saw the clovers -- they looked a little like "clubs", and the inspiration muse took over.
In the end, I wanted it to include a few of my favorite endeavors: portraiture, stained glass (I enjoy the faux-painting), and lettering.
