Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, an early Indian agent,
compiled the Ojibwa legends that led Longfellow
to write the “Song of Hiawatha,” set in the
Upper Peninsula [of Michigan] along the shore
of Lake Superior, the “shining Big Sea Water".
In 1820, Schoolcraft had visited Picture Rocks
and described it as having “some of the most
sublime and commanding views of nature.”
