44.12 - Split Rock Lighthouse: Lit For The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial 2009

Every year on November 10th, the anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald,
Split Rock Lighthouse holds a memorial for the 29 men lost in that disaster, along with
a general remembrance for all who have been lost on Lake Superior. The lighthouse
staff do not often light the "big light", this is one of the special occasions.

Hmmm... January might be a good time to head for pleasant climes, unless you are really desiring serious ice and snow pictures. But I can certainly recommend Split Rock Lighthouse next summer or fall: August 1st of 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of its first lighting, and events are planned throughout the season. We plan to be there, as always (as you can see!).

Wonderful capture! Your Split Rock images have actually had me contemplating a January trip to the North Shore. My wife, however, is lobbying for Arizona!
