Fabulous detail,Sue. One of the best I've seen of this woodpecker. Here's one I have labeled "Downy": http://www.pbase.com/isabel95/image/109616365, and here's one I have labeled "Hairy?" I guess they're hard to tell apart. My notes say Hairy is larger and has a longer beak than the downy I think yours is a downy.
