Hi moazebulon

The 70-200 F4 is a very nice lense but a bit short for birds (the difference between 280mm and 420mm is big)

Since I became a bit crazy about birds-photography I was looking for a longer tele within my budget
I was considering the 400 5.6l but then I found a second hand 300 F4 (old version) and went for it
for my purpose is perfect ......................not too expensive not too big and with good image quality
For a hobby-photographer is more than enough in my opinion

but the 70-200 is much more versatile lense (it is also great for close-up, portraits and panorama )

In the end they are quite different lenses and you have to see which ones fit better your needs

I'm looking at the major part of your very good bird galleries and I'm very impress by the result of the combination of your fix focal lens with TCx1.4 (long-eared owl 420 f/5.6 => 300 f/4 + TC1.4 I supposed ;+) ).
So at this point of my reflexion and with this subject type I'm looking for, I think there is a better compromise with 300 fix focal than 70-200
All in all, you have take some very good picture : nice out focus, pretty nice composition ... thanks for your shoot and your help.

Your reflecttion is right but the camera doesn't register the second TC 1.4x
so you have to had one stop to what the exif-data shows (I manually modify the focal lenght in the exif but not the aperture.................I am too lazy) .
the 70-200 with 1 converter gives very good image quality. In some occasions (busy background) the autofocus can hunt.
with 2 TC (1 canon + 1 cheap Kenko) is not an ideal set -up but it works. IQ is still OK but autofocus speed and accurancy can be very disappointing. You can use it only in good light conditions.

The second way to reach 392mm is to use two TCx1.4 but even here I can't explain the f/6.3 !
(70-200 f/4 + TC1.4) + TC1.4
first f-stop loss
=> 98-280 f/5.6 + TC1.4
second f-stop with the second TC
=> 137-392 f/8
Where is my wrong part of reflexion ?

Permit me to retype my question (post on IMG_7672) because all picture here has the same characteristics and it's a problem for me.
Excuse me for the poor English of a French user.
Can u explain me how you can get this picture at 392.0mm f/6.3 setting with a 70-200 f/4L IS USM Lens ?
The only way to get a 392mm is to use a TCx2 (teleconverter) or with this combination the max aperture setting (20-200 f/4 with TCx2) is f/8 (2 f-stops loss with TCx2, one with TCx1.4 : 4 -> 5.6 -> 8).
So there is an interrogation for me, so whatever the lens used is not the a f/4 lens one or the 392.0mm is wrong ?

I also add explanation for this question : you take some interesting and goods picture here and I'm looking for example takes with the F/4 lens (I'm looking for this lens).
An other interest for your picture is that the subject is in the line off my preferred picture subject.
