Molokini is a cinder cone 2.5 miles off the coast of Maui that has eroded away into a half crescent. It's filled with fishes and other marine life. A wildlife reserve, where snorkel boats pull into it's protected waters filled with tourists who want to see the beautiful variety of tropical fish living there. With water visibility of up to 150 feet it is considered one of the top 10 dive sites in the world.
Behind it is Kahoolawe Island, the smallest of the eight main Hawaiian Islands. It was used as a military live ammo test/training area until 1991 when President Bush ordered it discontinued. After some cleanup of unexploded ordinance, In 1993 it was turned over to the state of Hawaii. It remains uninhabited. It is a desert island, with little vegetation. Too short to develop orographic precipitation and in the rain shadow of Maui, it seldom rains there.
