I've got the same questions as Jack, but I'll add one more guess on the little one: possibly a starter to get the big one moving? (though that sure could be a pleated filter for a squirrel-cage fan).

So since it's gearless, is it a complete variable speed DC motor? Is that a temperature controlled cooling fan mounted on this side?
