Wow, I've never seen anything like that. It looks as if the holes were carved out just for the acorns. As Vern observed woodpeckers are usually after insects, and I can't imagine a squirrel going to the trouble of making holes like that to store acorns in... All in all very interesting!

That is amazing, Steve. I would guess it was squirrels that did it, but don't know. Woodpeckers are usually after bugs.
