Great angle. With my encyclopedic knowledge of the avian species, I can tell you that it is certainly a gray checkerboard-breasted something.

Cute guy. I would've guessed a thrush of some sort too. Looks kinda like a Sprague's Pipit (very rare in fall/winter in California), except his bill/legs look more grey than light gold.
