Who's ugly!?
by Ruth Jackson

Since cicadas appear to be "in" at the moment, I thought I'd try and redress the "ugly" perceptions before we give 'em complexes as a breed!
Quite handsome IMHO, this Greengrocer, with its smooth, velvety coat and distinct lack of gloss. Friendly, too!

What a great shot. Yeah this guy is "almost" cute. I had no idea they were quite that big having never seen one in person. Lora

Ruth - if you've been following this gallery you'll know that Bottles and I both entered a cicada. On that note, I fear that 'Rocky' and 'Herman' are in deep trouble. Rocky is flat-out ugly, Herman is too cute to be legal - and your little guy is drop dead gorgeous! Like Bottles said - a wonderful entry and I fell in love with him at first sight.

This is a beauty. Must have just shed its shell.
Did you try kissing it? I'm curious what it (or maybe you) turned into.

Wow Ruth, what a beauty! I'm beginning to feel guilty for even suggesting that cicadas are ugly :-) I don't think I've ever seen one like this, but I understand there are about 2,500 species around the world. This is really an excellent shot, with nice composition and perfect focus, and a wonderful entry of this challenge!
