29-SEP-2007 Helen Betts

5th place
Soaring

by Helen Betts

Arlington, VA

Taken at the Air Force Memorial, a new monument built only a year ago.

This is one of three enormous steel monoliths rising 270 above the ground; the shape is meant to convey the Thunderbirds' "bomb-burst maneuver," with only three contrails depicted so as to represent the "missing man formation" used in Air Force funeral flyovers. They are filled two-thirds of the way up with concrete and have 1-ton lead balls in the top sections to prevent vibration. For more images of the memorial, see http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/86440027 and the two following images.

Thank you, everybody, for all the wonderful comments! We have been passing by this memorial for almost a year now but never stopped to look at it until the other day as it really didn't interest me from a distance. I found it was pretty spectacular, and now I'm enamored with it and want to go back when the sun is in a different position and at night, when it's lit up. In any case, it's definitely worth a visit when in the Washington area (very close to the Pentagon).

You have an incredible eye for composition and light Helen and I think you have made more of the monument in this shot than the originators.

Your treatment makes it seem like a cartoon image. I imagine this being a frame right out of "The Incredibles" or "Toy Story IV". Really interesting catch and presentation. jrdu
