Laura, I am not sure if it is an island - i could not see it from the other side but it certainly looks like one. About the name... errrm.... well, what we were told was that they were named by a group of french trappers. These men, obviously far removed from female company in the western wilderness at the time, were irresistibly reminded of breasts by the shape of the mountains and hence they named the peaks Grand Tetons or Giant Breasts/Nipples :).
