Thanks for the link to the Noisy Miner. I thought NJ mosquitos were big but nothing compared to this fellow. By the way nice motion in his wings too. I love the wake behind the pelican.

Oh, it was the little buzz-bomb that had all the attitude! The poor pelican had just been cruising quietly, doing a spot of preening and generally minding its own business, when this chattering menace appeared, causing it to duck its head and neck nearly a foot down into the water. The small critter is a Noisy Miner. Highly territorial, and notorious for tackling anything they view as an outsider, regardless of size. I'm convinced they'd take on a 747 if they could catch it!
