This pomegranate is still hanging on a tree in an orchard in Central California. I was able to ID this bug as a "Leaf-footed bug" (Leptoglossus phyllopus). These bugs overwinter in piles of leaves, and in this case, it looks like they have hollowed out a home inside this pomegranate. There were about 5 or 6 of these guys on this pair of pomegranates (see previous photo).
