Beauty is Only Skin Deep
by Helen Betts

Okinawa, Japan

This is a dragon fruit, imported from Thailand, I believe, but they also grow something like this here. I've always wanted an excuse to buy one! Unfortunately, I didn't sample it because I made such a mess taking this and some other shots with some really juicy persimmons, I just dumped it all in disgust and had to clean everything -- me, the kitchen, a T-shirt, the camera, the tripod...

Great shot! I never saw that fruit before. Very clever arrangement and title!

Thanks, Zoom Boy. This was taken on a black T-shirt, but I ended up with persimmon juice and lint on it, so in PS I set the background color to solid black, selected the background in the original image and replaced it with the preselected color. Helen

Great shot Helen! I really like the pink/white/black combination. How did you obtain the perfectly dark background? ZoomBoy

Helen. Wow!! Your works just keeps getting better. Great choice of subject. Your lighting really brought out the textures, tones, and forms. This seems to continue the tradition, if I remember correctly, of some earlier oriental sweet potatoes photos you posted some time back. Outstanding. - R. J. (Imager)

I agree re: the background & seeds. Looks like a stock photo for an upcoming book on exotic fruits/foods. Nice shot Helen. (PS: I think we're all v.curious as to what this fruit tastes like:) - SB

Wow, I've never seen anything like this! It's too pretty to eat. How big is it? You've done a great job; the colors are wonderful and the black BG sets it off perfectly. -faye
