Thanks for the info ;-)) and good thing I didn't know that yesterday!!!!!!!!!! This was only the 2nd time in 25 years that I rode a Cable Car because they scare the heck out of me!! When I shot the City by the Bay, I was where the guy taking the pic with the black shorts was. Holy Moly!!!!!!

This is where 2 cable car lines cross (Powell & California Streets) so 1 cable car operator or "gripman" (usually the one on the Powell St. line like the one in the pic) has to let go of the cable & coast across the tracks of the other. Pretty scary if you realize what's going on. I rode on more than one that couldn't re-catch the cable & had to coast all the way back to the bottom of the hill to start over.
