5th: From One Extreme to the Other
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

For some unknown reason I've always loved this view and seem to photograph it every time I see it (which is very often), hoping for the right combination of light and clouds. But it highlights the extremes that you can find here -- from nature to low-rise dwellings or shanties to incredibly expensive high-rise apartments to modernistic monuments. Although I wouldn't call Ankara a beautiful city (far from it), I've lived here longer than any other place during my entire marriage (23 years), and it definitely has a special place in my heart.

Beautiful shot - I love the clouds and the bright exposure!

Very good work, Helen. The contrast of the repetitions (natural - artificial) really makes this shot for me. MCsaba

Thank you both so much for the kind comments! As I said above, there's just something about this scene that I love, although you would never imagine the great distances between the buildings in reality -- the buildings on the right are somewhat close, but the grey apartment building on the left is quite a distance away (I watched it go up, in fact, five years ago, and ruin my view) and the tower on the far left is quite far away, overlooking the entire city. Helen, I love your work. I"m going to Mnpls today to see a Diane ARbus exhibit, get inspired and then take some pics. Your pic inspired me too

You've created a nice shape to the picture using the buildings, well done :)
