Thanks Ian. I did enjoy doing this, as I'm basically more of a technical photographer and generally have an utterly useless artistic imagination. I suppose the little penguin provided some sorely needed inspiration as it was a 50th birthday gift that really hit the spot. I'm not at all into tizzy ornaments, but very much appreciate the clean, simple lines of things like this.
The overall mood was via ceiling bounce flash (about 3 stops deliberate underexposure) on to a blue cloth background that curved under the penguin to become the foreground as well. The penguin was accentuated with a key-chain light that uses a single white LED. Truly this is one of the most marvellous little novelties I've bought in ages. It's had a heap of use in and around home and car for all manner of things, and its lithium cells seems like they're going to last forever. A fascinating and versatile light source with bluish-white light of remarkable intensity and a beautifully smooth pattern. I just used Sunny WB for this without bothering to fine tune it. FYI here's a shot lit the same way but with no background flash:http://www.pbase.com/fitzdocs/image/35783460/original - Mike
