The Racetrack Playa, one of the many difficult to access areas on the park, but worth every bump and every bit of sand and dust you need to breathe in order to get here :)

I just love this spot. My family used to travel to Death Valley at Christmas time when I was a kid. We were always amazed by these rocks. Ann C

ahhh the infamous RaceTrack! Is that really the reason the rocks move? I remember watching a TV program on this and they seemed to suggest some supernatural powers. Dramatization I suppose. Beautiful picture by the way. I really like it - Perfect for this challenge.

Hi guys and thanks for the comments... these rocks vary wildly on size but at the time I was there, the biggest one was about 10 inches across. This one was about 6 inches. There are several theories about the movement of the rocks on this playa, but the one that leads the bunch is that whenever some humidity gets here, the very fine soil turns into a slippery medium and then the high winds that blow here from the pass you see at the background and moves the rocks slowly. I love all 3 of these WA shots, Carlos - especially the low-perspective ones that show the great textures in the earth in this area of the world. I'm wondering about the rock in this one: How big is it? What would have caused it to move along the ground and leave a trail like this?
