The Silk Floss Tree is well known for the large spikes
protecting the trunk and limbs.

After blooming, pear-shaped fruit appear which open to
release seeds attached to a silky floss.

Mike, I discovered this tree while on vacation in Florida. I think it is the same species as cUrVe's image. ...and mexiwolf, you're right - one does not rest against this tree :-). The spikes are unbelievably strong and sharp. Bev

Fascinating, Bev, and lit just right to show off the spikes. The whole thing is beautifully sharp and looks quite 3-dimensional. You certainly have your share of interesting flora over there as well! :-)

I wonder if it's the same species as shown (from Israel) in cUrVe's UFOs challenge way back in 2002...http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/image/2397569/original
