8th Place (tie)
Wishing you Joy...*
by mlynn

Okay, not getting too fancy yet;
just took some pictures in the fresh snow this morning, and wanted to share them.
Just after I took this photo, Loki attacked and ate the rose hips.

Isn't it amazing how the simplest finds can make for such beautiful images? I agree with what someone said about a camera: It's an instrument that teaches us to see... without a camera.

Great stuff Melanie. Great attention to detail which truly pays off handsomely! Fremiet

Fantastic composition. I love how it works and the message it conveys. The red color really makes an impact and the quality of light is great.

Fantastic job.

I think this is lovely. I adore the fragility and such stark beauty. Also the font and frame are just so classy and apt.
If I had shot it I think would have tried having the 'droop' take the fronds of the plant out and over the frame /border a little. To give the effect that it's trying to creep out of the landscape and into the warmth of your lounge ! I know this technique has a name but I can't recall the jargon now.

But I could never hope to accomplish such a beautiful shot as this, Congratulations. It's quite exquisite in it's seeming simplicity.

Especially nice work on your font and border design.

Another nice one, Melanie. The background doesn't really bother me, and in fact I like the one dark rose hip. A good shot of the season. Helen

Love the bright reds agains the white snowy scene, Melanie. The play with the border and text are exquisite. The black rose hip does not bother me; however, I tend to agree with braonm regarding the cluttered background. I'm glad you'll get the change to re-shoot this. These are perfect subjects against the white snow. Nice visual and artsy concept. Sonny

Thank you both for your comments and suggestions. I wondered if someone would mention the black rose hip. Once I come up with something else, I'll probably replace this one. And there are plenty of rose hips left if I choose to try again :). Braonm, it was in the single digits (Fahrenheit) when I shot this-- well below freezing. --Melanie

A little cluttered, foreground and background. I really like the red against white, but there's that one black guy, maybe turn him into red. I especially like the snow path fading into the distance along the right side, for some reason that is my focal point, and why I like this photo. Maybe clone out those little twigs and red guys off on that far right side to emphasize the path back?

How cold was it when you were out! That's dedication.

Melanie, I like the natural setting & the contrast of the grass and berries against the snow, especially that touch of warm, red color. I like the "weeping" pose and DOF here too. Again, very nice how you did your text and border line. (*) Maybe also try a shot where you isolate some grass/rose hips against just snow to produce a more minimal/"positive space" photo. If you can't find any more rose hips, at least you have this shot as a lasting memory despite the loss :) Those puppies can certainly be crazy, especially when they frolic so much in the snow. Nice photo and greeting. MFC
