The Fly by Justin Miller

Well, it's the final day of entries...a crazy week and too much to do this weekend. Last week I managed to squeeze off a few photos - changing one day after work, the inspiration hit me for something that 'flys'!

This was shot using a 1978 Pentax ME Super 50mm prime lens reversed and handheld at the end of the 717 lens to sub as a closeup lens.

Sony DSC-F717
1/30s f/2.4 at 48.5mm iso320 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Justin, I like your clever take to the theme...nice DOF and good placement of your "fly" within the scene. I like the mix of light and shadow here too...and the way the eye follows the lines of the composition. Looks like your handheld prime lens made a great macro tool. Fun idea...nice shot. MFC

Thanks all...I had fun experimenting with my first-ever closeup shot. I kept reading about people on dpreview using reversed lenses as closeups, so I figured I'd give it a try. Unfortunately my only basic, non-zoom lens available was from my old Pentax...and it was only a F2.4. I was using the 717 handheld, and holding the Pentax lens to the end of the 717 by hand too...closeup lenses are very tricky to try to get the right depth! Next time, I know I'll use a tripod, and maybe I'll splurge for a real closeup lens! Oh...and I had shorts on when I took the pic, just so nobody gets any funky images in their head of a naked guy photographing his jeans on the floor! ;)

Clever idea, Justin - I'm still laughing! You got great results with your substitute macro lens. Bev
