The Path of Life
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

These were more of the women described in the photograph next to this one. Everybody wanted to be photographed with the baby, Alena, who didn't much want to cooperate. When I was getting ready to photograph these particular ladies (head on), I caught sight of the older woman sitting on the path leading to the citadel (really, the "Tourist Path"), waiting for customers, and was struck by the beginnings and endings of life, which can be particularly difficult in this part of town.

For more pictures from this day, go to http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/return_to_ankara&page=3 They're not all there yet, but I've been rushing trying to process as quickly as possible since I promised to print and mail everything to the ladies.

Wonderfully original take on the theme, Helen. I really like the sharp contrast between the women's clothing and the drab buildings and pathway. Thanks for giving the link to the series of theses images. I thoroughly enjoyed them.---Deb

This is great Helen. You got the composition just right, my eye follows a path through the picture. Beautiful

Great and original theme idea...I initially looked only at the two women and the baby, and then my eye wandered to the left for the lady sitting on the path...that really does have a forlorn and sad, lost look to it...and it does show the path of human life from nearly the beginning to nearly the end.

Wonderful images, Helen, chronicling pathways both literal and symbolic. Thanks for the commentary on how you managed to get these pictures, too. Very nice work! Bev
