On the Tourist Path
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

I went up to the old part of town today to try to find some "pathway" shots since the entire citadel area is full of paths and very few roads. These ladies crochet purses and such to sell to tourists, and getting through them unscathed can be a somewhat daunting challenge. But today, for some reason, maybe because my husband wasn't with me, or maybe because I knew several of their daughters (who sell bracelets and whom I had photographed for another challenge and had actually mailed them the photos), they invited me to take pictures of them -- which amazed me, since in general headscarved women around here go out of their way to avoid being photographed. Even the older lady, who was a bit hesitant at first, later asked me to take a picture just of her. One of them went and woke her baby so I could get some photos of them together; others called their kids for pictures. Then they put a headscarf on me and one of the daughters took a shot of me and another one of me holding the baby. Of course, in the end I had to buy a purse ($4.00) and a few bracelets (.80 each) but it was quite a delightful afternoon.

For more pictures from this day, go to http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/return_to_ankara&page=3 They're not all there yet, but I've been rushing trying to process as quickly as possible since I promised to print and mail everything to the ladies.

More great texture and wonderful figures. The first lady appears least sold on the pic :-) John

Helen, I also like the appealing mix of colors and textures here. Neat how the ladies all line up along the pathway. Both of these shots are really nice...and come with a very interesting story to tell :) Well composed and taken. MFC

Helen,
I like the diagonal composition that draws the eye into the picture. I appreciate your text along with the image. It's very interesting to read about life in another country. I agree with Deb that the contrast of color against the gray textured background works very well.

Another wonderful shot, Helen. Your work is so consistently of such high quality. And as a 717 user I am so pleased you have abandoned the H1. All the H1 talk here was giving me feelings of camera inadequacy, but if the 717 it is good enough for what you do it is certainly enough camera for me. --David W.

Money well spent, Helen! Good job of combining our topic with a human interest touch. I really like how the women sharply contrast their drab surroundings. As with your first contribution, I find myself wondering how these buildings remain standing.---Deb
