03-MAR-2005 Helen Betts

7th Place
The Boiling Point

by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

I'm undecided about submitting this, but after nearly flooding my kitchen (literally), soaking two rugs that are now hanging off the balcony to (hopefully) dry, getting splotches of hot water all over my filter (and me) and much frustration over the course of two very late (or very early, depending on your perspective) nights, I figure I may as well. As a side note, I wasn't able to get my external flash to work properly for the shot(s), thus was stuck with the glare from the onboard flash.

Helen,

I hope the hose is now dry:-)

I can tell that the work was for a good cause ... very neat image ... I have never been able to shoot images of liquids on glass like this one.

Excellent.

Sorry to hear about the mess and the flooding but you did get the shot! Nice image with great tonality. Seems like you had fun doing it:)

Linda -- I actually did start this the first night at midnight ("Just a few minutes," I thought...), and pretty much the same time the second night, going to bed around 4 or 5 both eveniings (on a work night...). My process was pretty comical, now that I think of it. I put up a black cloth on the sideboard of the sink that kept falling due to the steam from the water I had to constantly boil in a teapot. I put this water in an elaborate Iranian water "jug" with a long, curved spout. But the real trick was that I had to focus in normal light, start the timer, rush to turn off the room light, grab my LED flashlight and point it in just the right part of the glass, grab the jug with my other hand and start pouring, making sure the boiling water was overflowing sufficiently enough and fast enough for when the flash went off. I managed to get water everywhere, including completely soaking two carpets as well as on my filter. I was even worried that it might have seeped downstairs. Maybe this is why I don't attempt this kind of thing very often :-)). Anyway, thanks for the comments! Helen

Helen, I can totally relate to the process! And why, oh why do we think of these things late at night!!:~) Is it really boiling? Tell us how you managed...and yes, I think your project was very worthwhile. A clever ceation, and it looks really clear to me!

Whoops! I didn't see your photo before I posted mine. Oh well, I guess great minds think alike. :) Great photo Helen.

A beautiful& larger than life portrait of Agitation...Water that is... not your filter and rugs hehe..Really neat close up of how the liquid is breaking up and even out..Yet so close to resembling the bubbles trapped in an icicle.. Very Beautiful silver like contrast in B&W.. A Very fine shot Helen.. and as Penelope says well worth it. Successful Dedication! ~Irish

Helen, I really like the overflow of bubbling action in this shot. Except for the hints of the glass, the turbulent water tower seems so unusually self-contained. Nice lighting and contrast that highlight all the bubbly details....lively and high-spirited. The flash glare seems to add to the overall effect by visually extending the line of flow into the mix...to me, it doesn't detract at all. I think you did a nice job here, Helen...good idea & nice shot. MFC
