Mystery Wine
by

I've always wanted to try this but never got around to it. This is
as good a time as any. I just wonder if it's a bit too subtle.

Based on feedback and comments from MFC and Irish, I've renamed this
image. Thank you both. It's definitely more appropriate.

Penelope, hmm ... a guessing game, I didn't think of it that way. :) From the foil I too would have guessed grand cru or premier cru but it's actually from Napa Valley. A lot less expensive. Thanks for the guess!

Thanks MFC. I'm really glad you like this version.

kt, I really like it...especially seeing the liquid as the most "spirited" part of the shot. I think all your efforts make a big difference. Well done. MFC

Thank you MFC, Irish, Melanie and Helen for all your comments.

I think I've come to terms with this experiment. This is actually a slightly earlier shot where the wine is livelier and yet still moody (thanks Melanie). I want to specifically thank MFC for his suggestions on lighting. I cheated a bit by using PS to produce similar effects but if it wasn't for his encouragement I would not have put the effort required to achieve this.

Kt ..Coming from my sensiblity..I like this deep dark image..The highlights are very metallic so the lights are really there..And I agree with MFC..It is mysterious.all coming fom the upper angles..Kind of like being in a black out but theres a moon..I like it! ~Experimental. Irish

Thanks a lot, kt, for sharing the lighting set-up here. I think you achieved your objective. I don't even know how to get the wine to selectively illuminate a little more...maybe a tiny penlight, similar to what you might find on the end of a keychain, directed down the inside of the glass...or maybe a piece of black paper with a tiny hole in it and a focal light source(or black piece of paper rolled into a cone?). Again, I think you achieved your objective...and it is more mysterious this way, like you said. So, don't pay much attention to my "wondering" if that isn't your artistic vision here. It's really best the way you like it best...and I like it this way too :) Nice photo & lighting experiment! MFC

Hi Mike, well I've switched from high key in the last challenge to low key and as you suggest, maybe a touch more light below would be better here. The setup is 6 low voltage halogen kitchen lights from above aimed directly at the wine. My main objective was to reveal just the silhouette of the glass. The light being so subdued does not penetrate much into the wine giving it a mysterious quality ... which I kind of like. I did try to lighten the wine but it brought out a lot of noise. Luckily I have some time to work on it. Thanks for wondering out loud. :)

kt, this is very low key, minimal, and subtle...there's just enough highlight/color in the glass, the wine, and the bottle to discern exactly what's going on here. My favorite part is the beautiful red shine off the neck of the bottle. I really like the way you composed this...& I think it's a great idea. I'm wondering what it might look like with just a tad more lighting/detail, especially in the wine itself...can you tell us what you did here? MFC
