Oil & Vinegar
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

Closeup of a cruet filled with olive oil (extra virgin, of course :-) and balsamic vinegar. I had photographed this same cruet with my long-gone P9 almost three years ago for the UFO Challenge -- just sat it on my kitchen work table and snapped a picture. This time I tried to be more creative, at least with the lighting (shot in a pitch-black room); sure is a lot more trouble now! (As noted below to Irish, here is a shot of the entire cruet, just to clear up any confusion as to how this could actually be oil and vinegar: http://www.pbase.com/image/40217957 )

Hi Irish and Mike,

Thank you for your comments. I had to smile at your mention of golden light, Irish. That's the olive oil! But I'd have to say getting the lighting right (and decent, even) was quite a chore. At one point I simply had given up, but then as often happens, a very simple solution hit me and it took only a few more minutes to get a shot I could at least work with. Here's a picture of the entire cruet:http://upload.pbase.com/helenpb/image/40217957/medium

Helen..A great piece of positive asnd negative space!..I love how the outer shell of the cruet is like the frame itself..Beatuful golden light you acheived here. This is a very unusual object... Mysterious..Is there really oil and vinegar in there?Very cool shot..Irish

Helen, your lighting efforts really make this shot eye-catching. Very nice in vertical format. I really like the overall symmetry and the interesting pattern in the cruet...beautiful color here too. Good idea...and a lovely abstract. MFC
