Üçhisar, Cappadocia, Turkey

This was taken at Üçhisar in Cappadocia, one of Turkey's most popular tourist destinations. Cappadocia is a fascinating area, featuring unusual volcanic outcrops, "fairy chimneys," dune-like formations, entire underground cities, and early Christian churches, monasteries and residences situated in rock formations. There are some additional images of Cappadocia at the end of this gallery http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/here_and_there_in_turkey I photographed this scene in color, but on an afterthought decided to try it in IR since I still had all my filters with me from the last Challenge, and I liked the otherworldly effect.

Thank you all for your very kind comments! This was a 12-hour trip to and from Cappadocia, just because I wanted to go to Üchisar to take a picture for this Challenge. (I'm lucky my husband is such a nice and patient person, and my dog was a good sport to put up with it as well, even though she threw up all over the car on the way home :-)) My original idea had been the fairy castle in the exhibition gallery, but when I saw this scene, just across the road from there, I knew I had found something special, and luckily I still had my IR filters with me. Helen, I really like the layered composition here. The contrast of the B&W IR conversion really sets off the clouds and the unique land forms. Nice photo...and a very interesting subject. MFC

Helen, I really love this image! It almost have the appearance and feel of a "layered scene" and, by layered, I'm NOT talking photoshop layers... I'm talking geographic layers so to speak. It's almost like three scenes / worlds in one. Breathtaking! Markjay

Helen, this is completely stunning. There are so many strong horizontal and vertical shapes. You've captured just the right amount of "natural" landscape to juxtapose the "surreal" landscape, in my opinion. IR was an exquisite choice. Very nicely done. -Michael Puff

Helen, what a superb use of IR! It just brings the characteristics of this landscape to life. The distant mountains have a fantasy mood to them... like something Bilbo Baggins would encounter. I was wondering what the colored version would be like and I just visited the link to your gallery above. The IR version has so much more interest. A first rate image, well taken.
