A 'Spin' On Wide Angles
by MFC

My friend's 11-year-old daughter, Adrian, stands beneath a large,
canvas, patio umbrella...sunshine is streaming thru the treetops behind.
She's spinning the umbrella, causing some motion blur.

Great composition on this. And I really like the vivid colors. Reminds me of an ad that you would see in a magazine. BTW, I did get your email about the ND400. But when I responded, you mail server bounced my message saying my mail server wasn't on its "allowed" list of servers to receive email from. So I wasn't ignoring you! :)

How do you come up with this stuff?!?!? Your creative juices were certainly flowing with this one! She has a Lady of Liberty look to her...or an angel. The circular stripe of the umbrella fabric right above her head gives her a halo.---Deb

I love everything on this shot (composition, movement, exposure, model…), if something I would highlight is the extremely original and clever approach to the “wide angle”. Jesus (JesusV)

Nicely composed, MFC. I like the subtle frame you created for the image. I wonder how much fun this would look with a sligly stronger umbrella motion blur? Great shot. Markjay

Mike, a wonderful blend of two simple and strong visual elements. I had little doubt this was your image before I saw the "MFC". You have truly established a style which is uniquely your own. Kudos to you. -Michael Puff

Great image, as usual, Mike. I especially like the composition, lighting and sense of movement in the parasol. Helen

Thanks for the comments. Miguel, I didn't use any fill flash. The canvas material ended up acting like a light filter/diffuser for the sunlight. I manually adjusted the speed, keeping the aperture at f/4.0, to expose for Adrian's face. This exposure setting simplified the background too...the canvas brightened up, and the "shadowy tree forms" became much more faint or disappeared on much of the canvas area. MFC

You continue to amaze me at how you can take the common things we see and make them special. This is a fun shot to view... creatively seen and captured. Bravo. -- LC

Very nice image Mike. I am impressed about the perfect exposure you have achieved here. Given the high contrast of the image, with the bright umbrella the exposure of the girl is right on ... I guess you used the flash for fill.

Excellent job and fantastic portrait for your friend.
