Topkapi Palace by Night
by Helen Betts

Istanbul, Turkey

This is a view of the famous Topkapi Palace (of movie fame), the early home of the Ottoman sultans. Taken from the terrace of my hotel in the historic district of Sultanahmet.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments. Topkapi is fascinating to visit in the daytime as well, but I have always loved this nite view as I think it looks sort of fairy-tale-like. And Miguel, thank you for pointing out the non-perpendicular aspect of it. I thought I had straightened the image before in PS, but as you say, it does look a tad off. I tried to adjust it again, but unfortunately I lose too much from the left side by doing so (and I foolishly didn't save an edited copy without the frame). Interestingly enough, I took a day shot from the same vantage point (without a tripod), and it too looks a bit offhttp://www.pbase.com/image/29663336. Maybe it's just the charm of Turkish architecture :-). Oh well, at least my pics are uniformly tilted! Helen

Helen, what a wonderful example of night photography! And a history lesson to boot! Actually, that's one of my favorite aspects of your postings. I always learn something from your work.---Deb

Helen,

Great use of shadows and bright areas to create a very strong image. My only critic will be that it looks like the building is not perfectly perpendicular, you can correct it very easily with PS.

Great job with all your entries.

I like this too, Helen...esp how the line of lighted "spires" separate the dark sky from the dark foreground. Nice shot & interesting architecture. MFC
