Looking for an Opening
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

Well, this is not what I'd call an artistic picture, but it's such a Turkish "opening," I simply couldn't resist :-). This is a two-way street -- believe it or not -- with a line of cars parked going in both directions on both sides. There is a white car starting up at the bottom of the hill (with two guys in front of it, urging it on) that is forcing an opening into the traffic going downhill that has now taken up the entire street. The car directly in front of me has decided he is going to back all the way up the hill. This chaos happens every day on this street, located in Ankara's old section. We spend a lot of time here, and while my husband is a fearless driver, I just close my eyes and hope we can make it through the mess without getting stuck, having to back all the way up or down, and without having an accident.

Helen, I love your narrative for this image. Even without it, your composition leaves me wanting an opening as quickly as possible. Very effective. -Michael Puff

You have captured the frustration level here very well. Good eye on a different take on the topic.

Helen: Mike pretty much said it all. This image is full of that particular kind of urban energy and you have it nailed. John

Good idea, Helen...a "real" sense of congestion here. The men in the street and all the buildings lined up "on top of each other" really add to this effect. I esp like your perspective, the effective composition, and the bright lighting here. Looking upon this scene reminds me of the anxiety that I feel when I need to be at work on time...and know that I won't be. Nice slice of life here, Helen, that most can identify with...well captured. MFC

What a great shot, Helen. It would be perfect for one of those "24-hours-in-the-life- of..." books. Um-m-m, I know I wouldn't drive in that mess! Bev

Great shot! I guess that's why my sister-in-law never got her license when she lived in Turkey - I'd be afraid to drive there.

Thanks for your kind comments everyone. Bill -- I find traffic in the States doesn't bother me at all after living here for a total of five years! I take a (very cheap) taxi to work every day and so am in traffic quite a bit. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't see something on the road that totally amazes me. But a bike (which you almost never see) would be even more life-threatening than being a pedestrian (which is pretty frightening), what with people doing the most unpredictable things imaginable. I think I'll stick with cars, which at least afford some element of protection around me :-). Helen

It is one for me to remember the next time I get stressed in traffic here. Nothing like what you have there. Helen, you captured it perfecting and nice exposure to it. Looks like good place to get a bike/cycle? Bill

I like a lot this image. It shows so well the "busy" life in the street ... very good capture and very good fit for the challenge.

It reminds me of my times back in Spain were we have also cazy traffic in small streets ...
