This is how the Flora presents itself in Vermont in the Winter and as you can see the Fauna is relating nicely.

The tiny Squirrel is not much bigger than a Chipmonk maybe ˝ as much again but he is quite an adversary because his teeth can be used as a terrible weapon acting like a chainsaw which he demonstrates nicely when eating a peanut… with his little paws he holds the shell and glides it from side to side along the teeth which go up and down in a biting fashion, clattering at lightning speed…

Blue Jays and Squirrels both prefer the peanuts in their shells. The Jays carry them away to a tree and beat the shells with their beaks against a suitable branch to crack them open – and as you can see they can be quite fussy in choosing just the right one ;-) Cheers, Bee

Thanks for your interest, Katherine... Ignoring each other? Certainly not in the case of the little squirrel, he kept a keen eye on the Jay and the minute the latter made his move and picked up the chosen peanut preparing to take off, the little one disappeared behind the fence, just in case :-)
The Jays and the Red Squirrels know each other very well - I do feed year round and they all know what to expect and seem to have come to an arrangement in their quest to get food especially in the winter... Bee

Great capture! I'm surprised they seem to be ignoring each other.

Cheryl and Bev, thanks for your nice comments... and Bev, interesting your info on how you feed the squirrels, thanks...Bee

Thanks, Miguel... Set it up? Well, I feed them there on the snowbank and attract a lot of wildlife - in the summer I even shot Raccoons in the night - interesting that was...the spot is just in front of my window and I make use of this prime spot ;-)

Thanks for your input on the cropping - you do have a point there and generally I am all for going in close but in this case I feel that the fence gives the pic some structure and for me it tells a story because behind that fence is the hiding place of the squirrel :-)Bee

Thanks, John...I can't tell you how pleased I am to have gotten this shot...But this is not that unusual, the little squirrels which come to our feeders are feisty little things and do stand up to even the Jays...but they are disturbed by the camera when they see a movement behind the long window where I normally watch them from and overlook this snowband on our deck...Bee

Excellent shot, sharp and well composed. Almost looks like an extremely clever composite, just great to get them both in the image. -johnebones

Bee,

This is an incredible moment you captured. Did you set it up?

Very nice image ... did you think about cropping it are removing the fence ... I think it might work better and will focus in the important subject.

What a great capture, Bee - getting both the squirrel and the jay in the same image! We have one little red squirrel and "more-every-day" of the larger ones. To answer your question about "treats" - in an effort to keep alive a squirrel that has lost much of its fur, I feed them sunflower seeds for their high fat content - but they'll eat anything, including cat food and apples :-) Bev
