Perspectives on myself
by Eric Hatch *

I guess the important thing is that ALL of these are distorted, and NONE of the perspectives is true!

Thanks, all who have commented. Regarding regularity, "accordian folds," part of the point here is that the perspectives DON'T define a regular surface or central plane; they're intentionally out-of-true.... but I'm sure the effect is unsettling to some folks. As for crispness -- thanks. The trick was to use a high f stop (7.1) for DOF and manual focus; prefocused on a business card clamped about where my head would be.

I was trying to create something that would say "lots of sides to this guy," but also to be playing around with the idea that perspectives lie -- they both reveal and conceal truth. I guess I was wanting a little privacy after all!

Regarding the background, it's a diamond gradient in black and white, starts as a ready-made PS gradient, then tweaked it some. I really like it and will use it elsewhere!

Thanks again all who commented. This was about 3 hours shooting and 4 hours editing -- and I learned a lot about lighting and the PS transformation tool in the process. FWIW, I'd like to re-shoot the split lighting shot (half light, half dark). Tried for the longest time to get a little light on the eye on the shadow side, but couldn't without putting too much light on that side of the face.

Nice play on words, Eric. These shots are nicely crisp (now I'm thinking I'd like a studio setup:). Good stuff. - Simon Bennett.

Eric, this is really clever! I like how it shows multiple emotions, but the layout and the way you have displayed them is really unique! Lisafx

Nice portraits, Eric. By looking at this (*) you gave me another idea: Make the images appear as if they are being folded out / open accordian style / like. I'm not sure it matters which image is in what order but, would lead the eye from left to right and view your images in an interesting way. I like the appearance of the lighting behind the images also. Mark J
