Throwback to the Past
by Helen Betts
A&W drive-ins are alive and well in Okinawa, complete with carhops. They are owned by an Okinawan firm now but are a throwback to the days after World War II when the island was occupied and then administered by the U.S. military, which ended in 1972 when Okinawa reverted to Japan. Many vestiges of U.S. rule remain, however, including A&W and Blue Seal/Foremost Ice Cream parlors.
