Like any other "hobby" these things can be taken to extremes... this one uses a car battery, distributor cap and spark plugs for RDS "rapid, seqential delivery" -http://www.frii.com/~bsimon/gattling.htm 'nuff said

Great conversation going on with this photo! What an eyeopener for me, worth further 'Net researching! If I ever see a potato fall from the sky, I will not be alarmed! Superb "relationship" capture...C.VanHook

Good question Deb. After re-entering the earth's atmosphere, the potato falls harmlessly to the ground where it eventually decomposes and returns to the circle of life. Unless of course it lands in or around a trailer park. In that case, it usually ends up on a bbq with an ear of corn and some burgers or hotdogs. Gee, I had no idea potato launching would generate so many good questions and comments! -Jeff

Potato launching? Sounds most "ap-peeling." These guys look quite serious about the whole process. This is a good capture of a living relationship.---Deb ....Say, what becomes of the launched potatoes?

ROFL!! Great picture. My brother-in-law used to shoot a homemade potato gun all the time. Thanks for bringing back a fun memory :-D

Great shot and a fine example of a HSSDS (High Speed Starch Delivery System) - Quite common at rural New Hampshire gatherings.

This is an unusual/interesting activity to me, Jeff...I like how you captured the father and son enjoying this together. MFC

Yes, sort of like a mortar. Potato launchers typically have a sharpened opening at one end. A potato is shoved into the hole which cuts the potato into the shape of the shaft and creates a tight seal. Usually hairspray is sprayed into the other end then ignited. The combustion launches the potato several hundred yards. This father son team built a potato launcher that utilized a hand operated air pump. They pumped 40 psi into the chamber at the end of the launcher and then released a valve allowing the compressed air to launch the potato. Detailed plans for both types can be easily located on the internet.
