16-MAY-2005 Helen Betts

10th Place (tie)
The ATM Man

by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

This gentleman used to sit outside my office every day and ask passersby for help. I got to know him during the three years I worked at that newspaper, and he was really quite a nice person. One day I asked if I could photograph him, and he said sure, how about now, and posed by the ATM he always sat by. I printed it for him, and his daughter sent me a good luck charm one day as thanks for the photo. I was quite touched.

I remember this one, Helen. Is it an F7*7 shot? Excellent portrait of a guy doing what he does.

It's a powerful image, Helen, full of the man's life & wisdom.
It reminds me in a way of Umberto D, a beautiful film I find painful to watch.
