pho·to·jour·nal·ism Pronunciation Key (f t -jûr n -l z m)
n.
Journalism in which a news story is presented primarily through photographs with supplementary written copy.
n : journalism that presents a story primarily through the use of pictures
Lets tell a story. A picture is worth a 1,000 words, right? Lets prove it. I dont know about you, but as much as I enjoy shooting landscapes, my ultimate experience is when I can tell a story or convey a meaning through my photography. But, there are ethical issues for some with traditional photojournalism, so we are going to paint with a broad brush on this one.
There are so many ways to tell a story through photography some requiring extensive copy, some may be through a one word caption, others may be through a pictorial. Maybe you have a gift for poetry combine a poem with a photograph. Grandma and Grandpas 50th wedding anniversary a black and white pictorial of special moments from the day. Traditionalist get out there on the beat. Dont want reality make up a story .. endless possibilities. Be creative. Be digital. Be real. Be fake. Be funny. Be serious .. you get the point. (A good example of a fake pictorial would be CindyDs submission, Cokes in the Wild, from the Coke challenge)
How will this challenge work? Well, you may want to do a pictorial, which may mean 3 or so photos. You dont want to waste all your entries on one story, so pictorials will be treated differently. Lets try and keep pictorials to three images, and please try to resize them to 800x600 at the larges. Lets be considerate of bandwidth and storage on pbase. So, you could actually submit 9 pictures if you choose to submit three pictorials.
CHALLENGE DURATION:
3/24/02 2:00 PM 4/9/02 11:59 PM CST. This leaves two full weekends as well as a couple days to process photos after the last weekend. Some may think this is too long, but I really think this may require a bit more time.

SOME GENERAL NOTES:
- because of the possible use of pictorials, it will be imperative to announce that a photo is part of a pictorial and to number them in order. I may end up creating galleries for pictorials, I'll have to see how this goes.
- again, because of pictorials, it will be imperative that some photos remain next to each other. I'm not sure how I'm going to do this yet, but it may result in the intentional/unintentional movement of photos. PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH THIS!!!
- Please feel free to contact me via email (jimfuglestad@hotmail.com) with any questions, thoughts, concerns, etc.....
I hope to continue discussions on some of the ethical/legal issues of photojournalism throughout this challenge. Lets not just share photos, lets learn about our art.
Again, thanks everyone for your appreciation of Diehard, Running Solo and 3 Minnesota Stooges. I am indeed proud of all three. It is an honor to be selected host of C14, and I will do my best to ensure that all runs fine.
