The clouds thicken as we cross the last high ridge of the West Needle Mountains before the ground drops away to the south in the Animas River valley. We try soaring, but the sun is covered by cloud and the lift is weak at best. After gliding past Durango we restart the motor and call the tower at Farmington for landing clearance.
