Here's our destination for the evening: Chico Hot Springs Resort at the foot of Emigrant Peak, a few miles from the Flying Y. Until recently guests were welcome to land their planes at Chico; the entrance road is marked as a runway and windsocks are still installed at either end, but for a number of reasons they finally ended that practice this year. It's too bad, because it turns out the entrance road at Chico is much better suited as a landing strip for a Stemme than the runway at the Flying Y, the surface of which is packed cinders from the old railway bed--and where the fences are only 50' from the runway centerline. We have a wingspan of a little over 76'; it's just too tight for comfort. After making a pass on the runway to scout the situation we reluctantly--and prudently--pass up landing at the Flying Y and head back to Livingston the way we came.
