I take no other photos for the last 120 miles enroute to Lewistown; there is nothing to see. This is an actual photo taken looking out at the 'horizon', unretouched but for a little contrast enhancement (!). We get low near Lavina about the time our auxiliary avionics battery gives out (we carefully reserve the main battery for engine restarts) and we're forced to shut down the electrical system; it's just like the old days, thermaling with the aid of an overdamped mechanical rate of climb indicator and navigating by means of chart and compass. The Big Snowy Mountains appear out of the haze when we are less than 10 miles away; once safely over the crest we glide in the direction the chart says will bring us to the Lewistown airport. We get fidgety and wimp out near the end of our final glide, restarting the engine and turning on the GPS only to learn that we are right on course and 15 miles out from Lewistown. After nearly 30 years of flying in the mountains and valleys of the West, where navigation is ordinarily a simple matter of simultaneous visual reference to several mountain ranges at a distance of 50, 80, 100 miles or more, this has been a throwback to the days when I was 16 and learning to fly in New Jersey, dogged by the summertime haze.
