A volcanic neck, Devil's Tower rises over 1200' above the Belle Fourche river valley, and lies near the boundary between the fertile uplands and pine forests around the Black Hills and the vast empty grasslands of eastern godforsaken Wyoming. Here you can see a nice little meadow on top, isolated and invisible from the base of the tower; I wonder how many Ph.D. theses came out of that meadow before its isolation was spoiled by countless rock climbers?
