Status in northeast Oklahoma (Tulsa County only): EXTIRPATED and ACCIDENTAL
Historically, when populations of prairie chickens were much greater than today, an occasional stray would wander out of its natural tallgrass habitat into some very unusual locations. This out-of-place bird spent over a week in midtown Tulsa on the grounds of the former Amoco Research Center for a taste of big city life. His popularity grew as his fans watched him perch on cars, window ledges, telephone poles, and nearby buildings. The local media threw him into the spotlight by placing him in the newspaper and on the evening news. He seemed quite content to spend his remaining time on Amoco's extensive manicured lawn which was the next best thing to being home.
