This is a photo of a handmade Bill Ballan reel affixed to a bamboo rod that I built on a Mike Brook's blank (McKenzie taper). The Ballan reel has the vintage look of the old Hardy reels and balances quite well with a lightweight bamboo rod. This is my favored outfit when fishing for the small brook trout found in our Appalachian headwater streams.
