The head was removed in order to evaluate the head and the block for rebuildability.
The head was not reuseable: cracks between the valve seats. That launched the search for some good aluminum.
The block was good: normal wear and tear. Going first oversize on pistons would be sufficient. That started the shortblock gallery and process.
Other things would need to be evaluated: the brakes, the suspension; the rest of the powertrain. The exhaust system would need attention. The missing third seat would have to be acquired and installed.
Lots of little things to go over; but the main courses of action were determined.
