SMR24 pelaw mainBW copy.jpg

SMR 24 runs around at Pelaw Main Colliery.

AS a member of the 14 strong 10 class of the private South Maitland Railways, Number 24 was one of the last steam engines to be used commercially in Australia, finally being retired at the end of 1987 with the closure of the line between Stockton Colliery and Hexham, just north of Newcastle.

all members of the class have been preserved, number 24, in company of numbers 22, 25, and 30 reside on the Richmond Vale Railway with its reconstructed line between the former Richmond Main and Pelaw Main collieries
