3801 coasts down the grade into Mittagong on a wet afternoon in 1999.

As the class leader of Australia's premier designed passenger locomotive, she was very nearly scrapped in the 60's. Fortunately a sympathetic management allowed it to be overhauled (at the expense of another 38) and returned to service in 1966. Returned to service in 1987, she was used heavily during the bicentenial, but tragically was involved in a fatal collision in 1989, whena suburban train collided into the rear of a stalled tour train.
In 1999 she was given an overhaul, and repainted into a shortlived Black livery. She is now back in green, but the opportunity of seeing her in black ( the first time in 30 years a black streamlined 38 graced the rails) was too good to miss.
