The goose on the left foreground (profile) was interesting. The white cheek patch was very reduced in size compared to the other 4 in the group -- although even the other three were not consistently sized. The bird immediately behind the "narrow-cheeked goose" had a cheek patch somewhat intermediate between the rest.
At first I wondered if the foreground bird could be a hybrid Canada x Brant, but the more I look at the bird the more I wonder if it's just an aberrant Canada. If it is a hybrid, I suspect it would be more than one generation removed from the cross. How variable is the cheek patch on Canada Geese? Does this odd appearance always imply hybrid in the background? Or are other explations likely?
