Lunch

Denali National Park, Alaska

There is little as exciting as seeing a large bear up close. And there is little more foolish than doing what the folks in this photo are doing as this large boar walked through the line of cars along the road. I was quite a ways down the road using a telephoto lens. These guys were literally a few feet away. The guy with the gray hair actually walked BACKWARD to get into the middle of the road to get a better photo of the bear as it approached. Denali park regulations state that as the bear approaches within 50 yards, visitors are required to be within 2 yards of their vehicles. Much closer than that, and visitors should be INSIDE their vehicles. Treating bears so brazenly as is illustrated in these pictures is not only foolish, but it shows a distinct lack of respect for the bears and the park. I am ashamed. Rangers were present for most bear encounters this day, but they arrived a bit late to take this situation under control...

To all of you,

I agree, these people are nuts. Now, when you drive on a highway, and it says 55miles/hr, do you listen? When I drive, the whole America does not care about speed limits. Is this idiotic? Probably not, because you do it too. Double standards? Just a thought.

Good that you know what respect means....but these are the people that cause the death of many bears...

This picture could actually help bears in the long run.The fact that so many people are so close to a grizzly, and are not attacked is quite a statement within itself. Many people endorse needless bear slaughter out of fear and ignorance.According to my interpertation of this photo the grizzly may not be such a brute afterall.Of course I already knew that, but many folks do not.
These folks may be taking a big chance, but there are many things people do that are dangerous, but enrich our lives.Few things are as dangerous as driving a vehicle, but imagine being told we can no longer drive because driving is to dangerous! Hurrah for the bear and hurrah for these folks ! Live and let live ! I must say though, being this close to grizzly,is something I would not recommend!

The very sad part of this is that bears are shot by authorities on a regular basis simply because a human was stupid and disrespectful. It is the bears who pay dearly. The bear never gets to tell his side of the story. Thank you for sharing your photos of these beautiful animals.
