This is the "end of the road" for salmon along Ship Creek, Anchorage, Alaska. The Elmendorf Fish Hatchery is located here, and the dam / waterfall / fish ladders have been neglected for so many years that the salmon apparently cannot proceed past these falls. The water is not deep enough at the base of the falls to allow the salmon to build up enough speed to make it up and over. Not that they don't try.
For some reason, no one is maintaining the old fish ladder here, or clearing debris from the river to allow fish to spawn farther upstream. Many fish are used for the hatchery located here, and others apparently attempt to spawn near the base of the falls, but I wonder what the success rate is!
