This cicada has been sucking sap from tree roots for 13 or 17 years, underground, and finally crawled to the surface, and across a sidewalk where I picked it up as it was just escaping from it's underground skin. It took less than an hour to fully inflate it's wings but a few more hours for them to dry and harden enough to fly away.
